Even the Daily Show has a community

Community is a word that is used in dozens of ways. The Black community, community economics, your community bank, community spirit, community of practice. And everywhere together there are invitations to join one community or other. Even the Daily Show has a community. “Join the community” on the Daily Show. How puzzled our grandparents and more distant ancestors would be by the idea that we can choose our communities, move from one to the other, and belong to many different communities. They might wonder, as I often do, if we really know what community really means, and whether we would recognize the real thing if we found it.
